My Boyfriend is a Monster 1 I Love Him to Pieces / 978-0-761-37079-6
I love zombie novels and I'm a big fan of graphic novels, so I was excited to see the news on NetGalley that a new graphic novel series - "My Boyfriend is a Monster" - has been launched with the first title having a zombie apocalypse theme.
At 130+ pages, this graphic novel is a fairly quick read, but it's incredibly fun, wonderfully well-written, and beautifully drawn. The story follows the tale of high school students Dicey and Jack Chen - a lovely baseball star and an utterly adorable science nerd - as they are paired in the school's "egg project" for health class. The two students are incredibly well-characterized and fleshed-out, and they grow realistically closer as they come to realize that there's so much more to their personalities than the stereotypes each one had been expecting.
When the two leave school early to go on their first date, things get a little dicey when a zombie plague breaks out - and I would like to add as a long-time zombie fan that the mandatory "explanation text" is well-done, realistic, and kept to a satisfying level not too little, not too much. When everything goes horribly wrong and Jack Chen is bitten, it's up to Dicey to save them both.
There are so many things to love about this novel. I enjoy the characterization immensely Dicey is a perfect example of how to write a three-dimensional girl who is equal parts capable and vulnerable and feminine and determined. Jack Chen is equally well fleshed-out - sweet, quiet, and shy, he starts with preconceptions about "jocks" and comes to learn that Dicey and her baseball teammates are more complex than their stereotypes. I love the pacing and the drawing - each panel flows easily into the other, and seems like a natural extension of the story. The graphic novel format works incredibly well with the zombie apocalypse setting, and adds a surprising level of tension to the action.
This really is the perfect example of a graphic novel done well. Poorly done graphic novels leave the reader feeling disoriented and confused, but this novel feels like you've read a complete and entire book, but in an exquisitely-drawn picture format. I highly recommend this to zombie enthusiasts as a fun read, and I hope the next in the series is as well-written and beautifully done.

I picked I Love Him to Pieces on a whim when I was making the rounds at the library a couple weeks back and totally forgot about reading it until the Ides of March Read-A-Thon came around. I was a little hesitant in picking this one up since I haven't had the best experience with teen graphic novels like these but this one turned out to be a really pleasant surprise.
I like Dicey and Jack a lot. Dicey was a really fun character. She was the lone girl on her high school baseball team, but she was also really smart and like a lot of teen romances this one came about because she was paired with Jack who is a total nerd for a school project. The two of them were really cute together and I like how they both took their time with coming to the conclusion that they liked each other and I enjoyed that they started off as friends before deciding to date
The zombie aspect of this short, but well written graphic novel to me was well done but a little unoriginal. It had the typical zombie apocalypse due to a medical problem but still I liked the way it was handled in I Love Him to Pieces because it wasn't all about zombies. It was about two kids who liked each other getting stuck in the middle of ground zero and having to survive until help arrives in the form of Jack's parents who are both doctors with the CDC who are the main doctors on the case looking for a cure for the disease.
Overall, I thought Janina Gorrissen's artwork was great, and well suited not only for the audience's age group, but for making the scenes match perfectly with the written element of the book which was equally as good thanks to Evonne Tsang. I thought this was a refreshing read, that wasn't too romance or too zombie focused but a light mix of both and I liked how FUN this was to read because the characters were just so cute and likable together and I can tell you Dicey definitely wears the pants in this budding relationship.
My only two issues with the novel were that I wish it was longer than the 123 pages. To me an extra 10 to 15 pages would have been good because I would have loved to see how Dicey and Jack got on afterwards even though the author offered an epilogue, I would have loved a bit more. Second, I would have liked more of a character background for our couple because I found that lacking a touch.
I would recommend I Love Him to Pieces to fans of graphic novels, who are looking for a quick and easy read in the teen graphic novel genre. This one was very cohesive and didn't fall apart in terms of the illustrations matching the story line and it was above all else. Fun. I can't wait to read more by this duo.
If this were a movie, I'd own it and watch it repeatedly. Nerdy-cute smart high school kid Jack Chen is paired with exuberant, athletic Dicey Bell on the classic "parent an egg" project. Mutual crush ensues, which is adorable, but trouble in paradise arises on their first date. A disease outbreak, during which Jack is supposed to be taken to his scientist parents by special agents. Nothing could go wrong there, eh? The page size means that Görrissen packs a lot of action and detail into a small space, and she pulls it off. And anyone who can resist the gal in a sundress with a baseball bat, backed up by her geeky boy-crush holding a crowbar... well, you and I just aren't the same kind of people.
Sadly, I have tried reading all but one of the remaining My Boyfriend is a Monster series, and I could not bond with any of them. I just want the continuing adventures of Jack and Dicey! Which don't exist. Alas!
Just what my granddaughter wanted!
Normally I'm not into Zombie Apocalypses they're just not my thing. But i loved this story. It was such a cute romance, and I can't decide if the book was too short or just right.
Anyway this is a short story I'll go back and read again.
I feel like the plot was lacking development, but overall it was pretty good; also, the design was great, really love Jack's and Dicey's design.
