Holding Smoke Elle Cosimano Books Reviews

While going to school, John “Smoke” Conlan worked hard to pay bills his meth addicted father left unpaid. When his father attacked him with a wrench in a drug influenced rage, he floated above his dead, battered body before returning to life after 6 minutes. While recuperating in the hospital he realized his spirit could leave his body at will. Soon after, John is accused of brutally killing his favorite teacher as well as a student who witnessed the crime. He knows a hooded man killed her, and that he killed in self-defense, but is unable to tell the court that he had been floating outside of his body when the murder occurred.

Convicted and sentenced to a juvenile prison filled with dangerous young offenders, Smoke leaves his body behind to ghostly wander the city and fulfill requests from fellow inmates. With each trip the threads that hold him to his body get thinner, but he doesn’t care as he’s ready to leave his scarred life behind. On one trip he meets Pink a tough young waitress who, unlike others, can actually see him. He soon realizes someone wants them both dead and, with time running out, will have to find the strength to hang on to make sure they both survive.

Smoke and Pink remind me of Patrick Swayze and Whoopi Goldberg in the 1990 movie “Ghost.” Cosimano’s very believable characters, which stem from life as the daughter of a Warden and research, combine to open eyes to what goes on in many juvenile detention facilities across the country.

Highly recommended for ages 14 and older.
John “Smoke” Conlan is serving time at a juvenile rehabilitation center in Denver, Colorado, known as the Y. He was convicted of two murders, that of his English teacher and another boy but he wasn’t the one that had actually killed his teacher and hadn’t meant to kill the boy either.

Smoke has one thing different about himself that the others in the center don’t have. He is not always locked up, he has the ability to do what is known as astral projection or have an out of body experience and move around freely outside of his cell and outside of the Y.

Smoke has spent his time traveling outside of his body doing favors and tasks for other inmates to ease his own time in lock up. One day though he meets Pink who can actually see him and who wants to help Smoke clear his name.

Reading the synopsis of Holding Smoke I was really quite intrigued but a little hesitant on whether I’d enjoy this story or not. I’m not a big fan of the character being locked up type of story but with the use of astral projection being thrown into the mix I was wondering how the story would turn out if he wasn’t quite locked up the whole read. In the end I’m glad I picked this one up as it’s certainly different from your normal type of fantasy/paranormal read but also easily falls into the mystery/thriller genre.

Smoke’s ability to be able to travel despite his incarceration led so much life into the story of someone being innocent but convicted and behind bars. Smoke’s able to get outside and investigate what had happened to himself but also his prison life adds in a lot of twists and turns and things mixed into the plot that a reader should find themselves completely engaged.

Overall, certainly a bit different and interesting read that mixes genres which I usually quite enjoy.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Crisp, clean writing style. From the first chapter all the way to the last page "Smoke" was as real to me as my own family. He can have our spare room as soon as he is released from the Y.
I very much enjoy the way this author constructs characters and concurrent storylines. As she herself tells us in a personal note at the end not everyone on the surface is who they actually may be on the inside. Thanks for a great read (also very much enjoyed the Nearly series!).
I liked this story and loved the premise of the special talent that smoke held. I did find some of the storyline improbable when everything panned out in the end... even for a fantasy story. I get suspended belief and all, but some things just didn't ring true. Mostly though, I enjoyed it. I would recommend it. It definitely held my attention.
