Between Dreams The Pendant Series Book 1 eBook Cynthia Austin Reviews
Cynthia Austin’s novel “Between Dreams” introduces The Pendant Series of romance novels. Sidney Sinclair shelves her plan of attending college on a scholarship to follow her long-time boyfriend’s dream. Rocker Ray Ryker entices her to accompany the band to L.A. where they have signed a record deal. Shortly after, Sidney’s grandmother suffers a stroke and she moves back home to care for the woman who raised her. Issues develop in her long-distance relationship when a mysterious green-eyed stranger enters her life. An instant attraction forms with Adrian that further complicates things. There are hints about a relationship in a prior life and references to the first tragic love story-Adam and Eve’s. Really good character development with a strong plot. Four stars as this ends in a cliff hanger but does leave the reader wanting more...so go ahead and get book 2 to continue this engaging story!
I love the premise. I began to care about the characters, but then, I didn't. The writing style was beautifully descriptive, sometimes overdone to the point that I lost interest and I wasn't sure what was exactly going on.
Yes, Sidney's boyfriend, Ray is a douchbag... I didn't care about that. It was true to his nature because he was young and gaining notoriety. I understood why she would put up with it. I worked through all of that, but my confusion was with Adrian.
Adrian's character was a complete contradiction. He was up and down and too all around to really care. I think about the possibilities of who he could be... Of her dreams, of her mother, and her grandmother and it really got to the point that I didn't care anymore. I wanted more of Sidney's relationship with Ray... Two characters that had substance.
I realize that this book is a first in a series, so I will give it the benefit of the doubt that it is setting everything up. It is a complex story that is hard to tell because it evokes religious beliefs that can deter some readers, but I found that I liked the twist that it provided, but I needed Adrian to maybe be fleshed out a bit more. He seems powerful, but weak, and maybe that is the intention.
I felt like in the end of this that I didn't care about who Sidney ended up with.
On a final note, I will be curious to read further into the series, and it wasn't because I felt the cliffhanger was so bad. I want to see where the writer is going with this very complex tale. The cliffhanger, in my opinion, wasn't that bad. I had enough details to know there was continuance to this saga, and I needed a break. So, it was a break. 3.5 stars.
This book has a lot of potential to go so many places.
The pros A strong premise. I mean, who doesn't like a classic good vs. evil of biblical proportions??? Fast-paced, page turning dialogue. Easy readability. A potential subplots with secondary characters. Also, I liked the build of the story. Good setting descriptions, too. I had a clear image of The Heights in my head.
The misses (for me) I wanted Sid to be a bit stronger in this first installment. She just falls for Ray's shit and I'm thinking "Wth, girl?" However, I have a feeling as the series continues, Sid will assert her indie spirit and surprise us all.
I would've given this book 5 stars, but it ended on too big of a cliffhanger for me. A little one is fine, but this one left me frantically flipping the pages on my hoping it was a mistake. Spoiler alert It wasn't. This story has a BIG 'OL abrupt full stop ending.
Now, I've got to get the second book because I was planning on sleeping at some point tonight & that'll only happen with a bit more closure.
Overall, I'd recommend this book.
Sydney is a girl who is discovering her own identity in the shadow of an up-and-coming rock star who doesn't always treat her the best. When she sacrifices her chances at college to follow her boyfriend to L.A. as he begins his career, she's called back home to care for her primary guardian--her grandmother. There, she dreams of this mesmerizing green-eyed boy who suddenly appears where she works in real life. She's attracted to him and curious, but stays faithful to Ray, the boyfriend. Being away from Ray causes the kind of tension you'd expect from a long-distance relationship, and (IMO) when he makes a "mistake" and she really should've dumped him, she sticks by him. During this time, her dreams get more detailed, and she also spends time with this mystery man, causing her to have conflicting feelings. The story involves characters 18 years and up, so this is a story with "new" adult situations--not that I minded.
Cynthia Austin's descriptive passages draw you in deep and paint a very vivid world. I admired Sydney for sticking to her guns and staying with her grandmother when it was obvious her boyfriend was having trouble with it. I tend to avoid love triangles, but the premise of this story intrigued me. It did end up confirming why I tend to veer away from them I never know who to root for, and it can stress me out! Lol! Obviously the back and forth between the heroes is there to hook us, and Between Dreams definitely accomplished that. Now I have to get book 2 to find out what happens! (Book 1 ends on a cliffie btw.)
